There are so many awesome little tips and tricks that will make your life easier in the kitchen and most of them are so simple to implement right away. Here are 21 tips that have made my time in the kitchen a breeze!
2. THE WOODEN SPOON ON THE POT TRICK!
Place a wooden spoon over boiling water to keep it from boiling over. I don’t know how or why it works but it does!
3. HOW TO EASILY SCOOP OUT THAT ANNOYING PIECE OF BROKEN EGG SHELL
Don’t you hate it when a little bit of egg-shell breaks off into the egg? Instead of fishing it out with your fingers to dig out the shell try and use one of the egg-shell halves to scoop it out. It works seriously well!
4. HOW TO KEEP LETTUCE BETTER FOR LONGER
In the bag or container where you store your lettuce, place a dry paper towel in there with the lettuce. How does it work? The dry paper towel absorbs moisture from the lettuce, which prevents it from going soggy and wilting. Yay for this tip!
5. PEELING BOILED EGGS WITH EASE TIP
Boiled eggs are easier to peel if you peel them under cold running water.
6. DON’T WASTE YOUR LEFTOVER SAUCE OR STOCK.. FREEZE IT!
It is a great idea to freeze left over sauce and stock in ice-cube trays so that you can use it in your cooking one cube at a time.
7. HOW TO PREVENT YOUR CHOPPING BOARD FROM SLIPPING
Use a wet paper towel or damp hand towel under your board to keep it in its place to prevent it from sliding as you cut.
8. THE BEST WAY TO CHILL YOUR DRINKS WITHOUT WATERING THEM DOWN
Frozen grapes are fantastic little cubes for keeping your drinks chilled without watering them down. Plus they look super pretty.
9. A SUPER EASY WAY TO PEEL FRESH GINGER
This works so well! Use the edge of the spoon to take off the skin with very little effort.
10. HOW TO MAKE HERB INFUSED OIL CUBES
Fill an ice-cube tray up with herbs such as garlic, parsley, sage, thyme & rosemary and fill the cubes up with olive oil and then place in the freezer. Then you have gorgeous fresh herb infused oil for cooking. Yum!
11. HOW TO MAKE YOUR ROAST VEGGIES SUPER CRISPY
Don’t overcrowd the baking dish when you’re roasting or it’ll make your food steam instead and they won’t crisp up. Give them a bit of space and you will get lovely crunchy roast veg!
12. HOW TO GET CRYSTAL CLEAR ICE CUBES
If you use boiled water to make your ice cubes they will be crystal clear instead of foggy. Amazing little tip and perfect if you are making pretty ice cubes that have flowers or fruit in them.
13. HOW TO SLICE AVOCADOS PERFECTLY
To slice avocados perfectly for salads or burgers, split them in half, remove the pit with the knife, then slice the flesh while still in the skin using the tip of a knife. When you then scoop out the flesh with a spoon, you’ll have perfect slices ready to go.
14. HOW TO MAKE YOUR FRESH HERBS LAST LONGER
Herbs are pretty pricey so you want them to last. You can extend the lifespan of your fresh herbs by rolling them in damp paper towels and placing them in zip lock bags with the seal slightly open.
15. HOW TO STORE YOU BANANAS SO THEY LAST LONGER
Separate your bananas and place each in a different location. Bananas release gases which cause fruits including other bananas to ripen quickly. Separating them will keep them fresh longer.
16. HOW FRESH ARE YOU EGGS?
If you aren’t sure how fresh your eggs are, place them in about 10cm of water. Eggs that stay on the bottom are fresh. If it floats to the top, it’s past it’s best!
17. ANOTHER GREAT EGG TIP
When boiling eggs, add a pinch of salt to that water to keep the shells from cracking.
18. THE POTATO TRICK
Do you ever look in your potato or kumera bin to find that it looks like a garden growing in there. Before you know it there are roots sprouting everywhere! To keep potatoes from budding put an apple in with them.
19. MAKE YOUR OWN DRESSING, IT’S EASY & HEALTHY!
Homemade dressings taste better than supermarket brought and are way better for you. No need for too much fuss. Just put some olive oil, garlic and lemon juice in a sealed container and shake.
20. A SUPER EASY WAY TO CRUSH GARLIC
Crush garlic cloves inside a zip lock bag with the back of a wide knife or cup. This way, your cutting board and knife won’t smell all garlicy!
21. HOW TO MAKE YOUR PORK CRACKLE
The rule of thumb that I use to get my pork to crackle really well is this… Put your roast in the oven on the highest temperature and allow the skin to crackle first before you cook the bulk of the roast, then turn the heat back down to 180 degrees. It should crackle with in 20 -30 minutes, but don’t reduce the heat until the crackling is perfect.
